THE FLOATING CITY |
A MUNICIPALITY IN MINIATURE
| The modern luxury yacht can be envisioned as a municipality in miniature. Not only does the micro-municipality provide living space for its inhabitants, many other facilities found in towns and cities all over the world are present as well. In addition to separate "homes," some yachts may have the micro equivalent of "Gold's Gym," the neighborhood school, the swimming pool, SPA, night club and corner bar. The tender/dingy can be seen as the inner-city mass transportation system and the smaller watercraft as personal and/or sports-utility vehicles.
Of course there must be an electric power station, with its associated "Tank farm." Also there is a potable water treatment plant and distribution infrastructure, alongside a waste water treatment plant. In fact, today's yachts normally have two separate waste water treatment or containment utilities, one for water and waste from the toilets, and a separate system for soapy water from sinks, tubs and showers, There must also be an area in which garbage is stored in preparation for removal to a "Suburban" location. There must be the equivalent of a grocery store, a fine restaurant, as well as a cafe', a hardware store, a garage where the all-knowing mechanic is on duty, a fire station with firemen in residence, and of course lest we offend by omission, the Mayor's (Captain's) office and Town Hall. Furthermore, there are two weather systems, which no landlocked municipality has. One is the weather system inside the city which is controllable, and the one outside which is, hopefully, controlled by going to where the bad weather isn't! All of the normal services expected of a modern municipality, as well as all of its citizens, are carried along for the ride. DELTA MARINE INTERNATIONAL, INC. was started in July of 1993 to deal with some of the problems created by the utilities associated with the city-in-miniature we affectionately refer to as "The Modern Luxury Yacht." As wonderful as these creations are, there are several necessary items that create less-than-wonderful problems for virtually every yacht afloat. Previous experience with ozone convinced us that it had the unique ability to enhance the enjoyment of yachts by reducing, and in many totally eliminating, some of the more bothersome problems created by the "Micro-municipal" services and utilities necessary to live "with" and aboard the yacht The first installation of the exclusive "Chem-Free™" line of ozone equipment was aboard a very well-known FEADSHIP to deal with odors coming from a black water holding tank vent. The vent was located just below the flybridge, with the result that no one would remain there for any longer than was necessary to get the job done in docking the boat. Naturally the vent odors made the flybrifge, normally one of the most enjoyable areas of a yacht , virtually uninhabitable whenever a head was flushed, or the tank contents were agitated from being underway. Virtually all previous small ozone generators for marine use dispersed ozone only into free air with a small fan or blower. The ozone was usually generated with a tiny corona-discharge, or high voltage type system either in front or in the rear of the fan. Such a system can not be used to introduce ozone into a holding tank of any type, whether for odor control or water purification. The Delta Marine International departure was to design ozone systems and devices exclusively for marine applications. All Chem-Free systems have a sealed reaction chamber in which ozone is generated in a controlled and constant environment. Reaction chambers are used in every Chem-Free Ozone system regardless of whether it is an ultraviolet or high voltage corona discharge, type generator. Air is delivered to the chamber from a small air pump or compressor, through a quarter inch inside diameter hose. The resulting air/ozone mixture is then delivered through a special ozone-resistant tube to precisely where and in the correct amount necessary for a specific function or job. Our unique method of generating and delivering ozone made it possible to deliver the ozone directly to the headspace of any offending tank, regardless of the type. When ozone is injected directly into the offending tank's headspace, it oxidizes the organic odor molecules and reduces them to odorless carbon dioxide and water vapor. Most yachts that had previously been equipped with the, at best, marginally effective charcoal "filters" for black water holding tank vents, removed and discarded them when Chem-Free ozone arrived. Black and grey water holding tanks and sumps have been treated on yachts from 10 meters to 100 meters in length with 100% satisfaction of the owners, captains and crews. |

The next area tackled by the Chem-Free team was indoor air quality, or the elimination of "B.O." ("Boat Odor") For as long as boats, yachts, and ships for that matter, have had cabins or other enclosed areas, BO has been considered an inescapable fact and an unwanted passenger. Due to the naturally moist and humid environment, mold and mildew are the prime offenders, although numerous other odors normally contribute to the deterioration of the air quality inside the craft. Ozone is recognized by the hotel and motel industry as the single most effective method of dealing with indoor air quality and hard to eliminate smells such as tobacco and body odor.
Once again, Chem-Free chose to use small ID tubing-delivered air and sealed reaction chambers in which short-wave ultraviolet bulbs generated the ozone. Tubing was also used to deliver the very small amounts of ozone necessary to deal with indoor air quality. Over three hundred installations have demonstrated the success of the method. Such systems have been installed to deal with odors from bilges, cooking, garbage, and even to totally and forever, eliminate diesel fuel spill odors. Furthermore, as ozone is known to destroy mold and mildew spores, it will eliminate them from a yacht, which brings cheers from those who are allergic to them. The next area addressed was the water treatment and storage system aboard the yacht. Most yachts today have a Reverse Osmosis water purification system to "Squeeze" fresh water from sea water. They are wonderful pieces of modern technology which, given proper maintenance, will do a great job in supplying potable water. However, when the RO water is stored in the tanks, problems can arise before it is used. Bacteria can create havoc with the water stored in a holding tank, and make the water stored therein a health risk for the consumers. Of more concern is the rapidly decreasing quality of water resources world-wide. Even if the RO water stored in a holding tank is totally pure, connecting to a dock side system or a water barge can easily re-contaminate the water. A unique system was developed by Delta Marine International, Inc. to equip even a full fresh water holding tank with an insitu ozonation system. The attachment device is available from Delta marine International, and very simple to install and attach to the ozone generator. Recent installations of the Chem-Free WQA ("Water Quality Assurance") system have received the same approval as the odor and indoor air quality control systems previously mentioned. Delta Marine International, Inc. and Chem-Free Purification Systems, partners for a cleaner, safer, and odor-free yachting environment made possible without chemicals, sprays or perfumes.
